From the Beginning
The history of Cushman dates all the way back to 1901, when Everette and Clinton Cushman first opened Cushman Motor Works in Lincoln, Nebraska. At the time, they specialized in gasoline motor manufacturing, a specialty they continued for ten years. Eventually, the company changed hands and the new owner, Charles Ammon, started producing motorized scooters in 1936, before moving to three- and four-wheeled vehicles in the 1950s.
This is where their popularity really started to take off. A number of celebrities requested custom Cushman golf carts, including President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Bob Hope, and Frank Sinatra. They dabbled in both gas and diesel carts until officially retiring the lineup in 1975 to focus on other products.
